Study life of Mobilities & Urban Studies

In Denmark, Aalborg University is renowned for having the best study environment in the country, which is mainly due to its study method. Close collaboration between the group members will allow you to get to know your fellow students very quickly. This lays the foundation for good professional collaborations, yet it is equally important that you have someone to talk to about issues that are not study-related. Likewise, it is good to have companionship when going to a café or out in the evening when you need to take some time off from your studies.

Living in Denmark

The International Accommodation Office (IAO) at Aalborg University assists our international students in finding a place to live when they arrive in Aalborg. The accommodation that is offered can be a single room in a private house, a dormitory room or a larger flat shared with other students. Costs and locations vary according to the type of housing. Most apartments are located in or near downtown Aalborg, approximately 5-6 km from the University’s main campus, while dormitories are located closer to the main campus. If you want further information about prices, application deadlines, etc.

Living expenses in Denmark will, of course, vary according to personal requirements and standards. Renting a dormitory room is normally between 1,900 and 2,600 DKK per month and a rented flat is between 2,600 and 4,000 DKK. Basic food expenses are between 1,000 and 2,000 DKK per month. Going out need not ruin you. An average meal including wine is about 100-400 DKK in one of Aalborg’s restaurants. You can of course find pizzas and set menus for less, or you can choose one of the numerous fast food places in town. Many restaurants offer cheap lunches between 11 and 15 o’clock. Aalborg offers a wide range of shopping opportunities, it is the shopping centre of northern Jutland and attracts people form our neighbouring countries. The city centre offers everything from special shops to large malls, many are located near the network of shopping streets.  South of Aalborg you will find a big area of super shops like Ikea, where you will find what you need at good prices.

Social activities

Urban life studying at Aalborg University

Aalborg is a multi-faceted city – full of contrasts – a city with a lust for life and all of its pleasures. It’s also grand, yet on a manageable scale. All the major attractions of the city are concentrated within a short distance from one another. From fast-paced fun to peaceful oases. From a foaming draft beer to sublime gastronomy. From the Viking era to the Middle Ages and on to modern art.  As an added attraction, the countryside around Aalborg is inviting, beautiful and offers several bathing possibilities.

Aalborg is the 4th-largest city in Denmark and has lots of cultural, social and sport activities to offer. Check out Platform4 for technology and art related events, the Utzon Centre for exhibitions, 1000fryd for one of Europe’s most active DIY scenes, the DGI House for friendly indoor football matches, the Skråen theatre or the Student House for concerts, or Northern Europe’s largest carnival.

At Architecture & Design the students organise a bar each Friday where students from all years are welcome. This is a great place to relax with a refreshment, meet friends and catch up in a cosy atmosphere. The Student House is located right next to Architecture & Design in the centre of the city. It is open every day, making it a meeting place and a good hangout for students from all across Aalborg. There are lots of events and concerts going on, such as International Night on the first Wednesday of each month when most international (and some Danish) students meet for a drink.
